Mophology

This drug is slightly sharp at the end like the brush-pen, ovate ~ fusiform, 1 ~ 4 cm long, and 7 ~ 20 mm in diameter. The outer surface is covered densely with brownish pubescent of 5 mm long; two dark brown bracts like rough scales are observed in two layers at the base. The bracts can be dissected longitudinally to reveal 3 calyces, 6 ~ 12 brownish petals, numerous yellowish brown stamens, and a brown pistil. The buds are brittle and broken easily. It smells characteristic, and tastes cool, hot, and slightly bitter.

Processing

DRY-FRIED MAGNOLIA FLOWER (초신이(炒辛夷)) : Dry-frying over a low flame can remove the hairs which readily irritate the throat, while retaining the original effect of the unprepared herb. This ancient preparation has generally fallen into disuse, but is still useful.

Contraindication

For a person having exuberance of fire due to deficiency of Eum, having Gi deficiency, having headache pain, having exuberance of fire due to lack of blood, and a person having toothache due to the stomach fire, the medicine should not be used. If it is used in large quantity, vertigo & eyes congestion may be developed.
