The body of a larva is joined with the stroma of fungus, grown in the head of the larva. The larva resembles a silk worm that is 3 ~ 5 cm long and 3 ~ 8 mm in diameter. The external is deep yellow ~ yellowish brown with 20 ~ 30 annulations. The transverse surface is flat and yellowish white. Annulation in the part of head is narrow and thin. The head is reddish brown. The leg is of 8 pairs of legs with distinct 4 pairs on the middle of body. The texture is brittle and easily breakable. The stromata is slim, cylindrical, 4 ~ 7 cm long, 3 mm in diameter, deep brown ~ blackish brown on the external of a stroma with fine longitudinal wrinkles, and slightly swollen on the upper side. The texture is leathery; the cut surface is milky white. It smells fleshy and tastes slightly bitter.

It is used with larva which have dried mycellium of Cordyceps sinensis

Processing

Dig the ground and pick in June, wash and dry it in the sun. If the worms are not dried, remove the impurities and dry it in the sun. Or get soft with wine, bundle 7-8 of it, and dry it at the low fire.

Contraindication

For the symptoms of exogeneous pathogens or the cough with blood due to heat in lungs, the medicine should not be used.
